The Setting:
The Light Rail glides by you to the north, ringing pleasant bells to let you know its there. Across the street, what is now a parking garage, was once the offices of the Pioneer Press & Dispatch. To the south, above the skyway, there’s a mural of people, animals, and ocean and on the other side of that building you can peep a sliver of 345 Cedar where the Pioneer Press officed from 1984 to 2016. To the north, behind the 1st National Bank Building, you can also see a sliver of the Pioneer Endicott Building–St. Paul’s first skyscraper and the papers home from 1889 to 1909. In 1941, the Pioneer Press merged with the Daily News and their office was 55 E. Fourth Street, also right in front of you. When you look at Central Station, don’t forget to appreciate the various building shapes of the city you can see stretch out from a block away.
